The right drum brake for your application

KNOTT offers five different designs of drum brake. Depending on the vehicle, the axle load and the braking task, mechanical or hydraulic solutions are used, from the classic service and parking brake to the powerful brake for high loads.

Cam brakes can be actuated mechanically as well as hydraulically or pneumatically through external cylinders and therefore allow the service and parking brakes to be combined.

Hydraulic simplex brakes are the most widely used design: the fixed support provides a backlash-free parking brake function and a constant characteristic value with good controllability.

Hydraulic servo brakes use a movable support bearing to transfer the friction force of the leading brake shoe to the trailing one, which achieves high braking torques with low actuating forces in a compact installation space.

Expanding wedge brakes score with fast response times and are suitable for ABS systems in commercial vehicle construction.

Expanding lever brakes are used on light trailers with linkage or a cable that can be retrofitted.

Each design covers its own requirement profile of braking torque, installation space and type of actuation.

Cam brakes

Cam brakes

The sturdy cam brakes can be actuated mechanically or hydraulically or pneumatically through external cylinders. This allows the service brake and the parking brake to be combined in one brake.

Cam brakes are used above all as parking brakes, and in air-braked trailers also as a combined service and parking brake in the S-cam version.

Hydraulic simplex brakes

Hydraulic simplex brakes

Simplex brakes are characterised by a fixed support in the lower area. This makes a backlash-free parking brake function possible. A constant characteristic value provides good controllability.

The hydraulic simplex brake is the most widely used drum brake and is applied in almost every field.

Available sizes: Ø 160 mm - Ø 500 mm
Braking torques: up to 25,000 Nm

Hydraulic servo brakes

Hydraulic servo brakes

Servo brakes have a movable support bearing (usually on the underside) through which the friction force of the leading brake shoe is transferred to the trailing brake shoe. This makes it possible to achieve high braking torques with low actuating forces.

Servo brakes are suitable for large masses where the installation space is structurally limited, for example in forklift trucks.

Expanding wedge brakes

Expanding wedge brakes

Expanding wedge brakes are available in simplex and duplex versions. They are actuated through bolted-on air or hydraulic cylinders, and an additional parking brake function is possible through spring-applied cylinders.

Expanding wedge brakes are used mainly in commercial vehicle construction and, thanks to their fast response times, are well suited to ABS systems.

Expanding lever brakes

Expanding lever brakes

Expanding lever brakes are actuated through linkage or through a cable that can be fitted from the outside afterwards, and they take on service and parking brake functions. With the optional integrated reversing mechanism, they are frequently used in light trailers.

Braking torques: up to 6,000 Nm
