How it works
The wet multi disc brakes from Knott work in an oil bath on the ball ramp principle and are available in multi-servo and mono-servo versions. Because the friction surfaces run permanently in oil, a closed, sturdy braking system is created: dirt, dust and moisture, the typical loads in off-highway use, have hardly any effect on the braking performance. The result is an even braking effect, a long service life and low-maintenance operation.
A variety of versions: designing the braking behaviour precisely
Different friction lining qualities, the number of lining discs and various ramp and wedge angles create a wide range of versions. This allows the braking behaviour and the braking comfort to be matched precisely to the particular vehicle, from sensitive controllability to high braking torques under continuous load.
Thanks to their wide range of versions they can be matched exactly to the particular vehicle and are used mainly in tractors and harvesting, forestry and construction machinery. For vehicle manufacturers, Knott application engineering matches the design, the braking torque and the actuation individually to your project.
Combination with an actuating cylinder
In combination with matching KNOTT actuating cylinders, service brakes as well as parking and auxiliary brakes can be realised, which can be designed as muscular energy, assisted or power braking systems. The actuation can be not only mechanical or hydraulic but also hydraulic-mechanical or a spring-applied combination cylinder. Alongside the pure parking or service brake function, combinations of service and parking or auxiliary brake functions are therefore possible.

Push wedge mono-servo version
The mono-servo version is the most widely used one. The servo effect from the lining disc resting against the actuator allows braking that is easy to control, with a sufficient mean braking torque. Used mainly in agricultural tractors and harvesting machines.

Push wedge multi-servo version
The multi-servo version uses the servo effect of several friction surfaces at once and is therefore particularly suitable for heavy machines with a high braking torque requirement, such as forestry and construction machinery but also agricultural tractors in the upper power range

Advantage: maximum braking performance in a minimal installation space
Pull wedge actuation
The braking force is applied through a pull wedge. This version is used above all on more compact brakes with moderate braking torques.
Available sizes: Ø 5.6" to 9.5"
Typical application: tractors, harvesting machines, compact special-purpose vehicles
Pull rod actuation
The braking force is applied through pull rods, a flexible form of actuation that combines particularly well with external spring-applied combination cylinders. Suitable for service, parking and auxiliary brake functions in one brake.

What is a wet multi disc brake?
A wet multi disc brake is a brake running in an oil bath that works on the ball ramp principle. Because the friction surfaces are permanently surrounded by oil, it works in a closed system with particularly low wear and low maintenance, even in the presence of dirt, dust and moisture.
Where are wet multi disc brakes (wet brakes) used?
Mainly in off-highway vehicles such as agricultural tractors, harvesting machines, forestry and construction machinery, and in industrial trucks, municipal and special-purpose vehicles.
What is the advantage over dry disc brakes?
The closed oil bath system is largely insensitive to dirt and weather, provides an even braking effect and achieves long service lives, which makes it ideal for machines with many operating hours under harsh conditions. A wet disc brake also produces no fine dust and therefore no environmental pollution.
How are the lining discs of a wet brake serviced or replaced?
Because they run in an oil bath, wet multi disc brakes need little maintenance. Servicing and replacement of the lining discs should be carried out by a service partner or after consultation with Knott application engineering, in order to maintain the correct design and braking performance.
